The Star System of Stewardship

The Star System constitutes a five pointed series of leadership actions or tasks that can provide a solid foundation for strong stewardship program in the parish. Usually the elements of the Star System require three to five years to put into place. Consultants can assist a parish in all of these elements.

1. The Mission Statement

The Mission Statement is a corporate statement by the vestry and clergy that answers the question What is Christ calling this community of faith in our diocese to do now?

2. The Stewardship Statement

The Stewardship Statement is a corporate statement made and signed by the vestry and clergy declaring their understanding of and commitment to good stewardship. It invites parishioners to join the leadership in a common commitment.

3. The Action Plan

An Action Plan is based upon the Mission Statement. It is a document that sets forth what actions can be undertaken to be more responsive to our Mission Statement

4. The Line Item Budget

The Line Item Budget is the principal means of providing formal accountablitiy (in combination with the auditor’s report) for the financial resources entrusted to the leadership by the parish.

5. The Narrative Budget

The Narrative Budget witnesses how the congregation’s collective offerings of time, talent, and treasure were invested in support of the parish mission, and how lives have been changed through the ministries of the parish.
